Our story: where roots run deep

Oddball Homestead and Shearing began the way most good farm stories do—with a stubborn heart, a garden and some back yard chickens followed by a few unlikely sheep, and a deep respect for doing things the right way. What started as a simple desire to care for animals and live closer to the land slowly grew into something bigger. We didn’t set out to build a business—we set out to build a life. One rooted in honest work, muddy boots, and the quiet rhythm of chores at sunrise and sunset.

From passion to purpose

The Beauty of the Misfit: Our Story

Oddball Homestead and Shearing didn’t grow out of a textbook or a traditional farm plan. It grew out of a deep-seated belief that worth is not defined by perfection.

When we first stepped into the world of fiber, we saw a gap that broke our hearts. We saw fleeces full of character and sheep with rich stories being tossed aside because they didn't meet a "standard." We could not see that a fleece was any less because it was black, grey, course or short, we wanted to find a use for it all.  We saw wool treated as a byproduct rather than a gift. We knew, right then, that we wanted to do things differently.

Learning the Language of the Flock

We didn’t just learn to shear; we learned to listen. We spent countless hours with experienced shepherds, practicing until our hands were steady and our movements were quiet. For us, shearing isn't a race—it’s a conversation. We built our reputation flock by flock, earning the trust of the animals and their keepers by proving that patience is more valuable than speed.

Why "Oddball?"

The name wasn't a marketing choice; it was an identity. We’ve always been the people who felt more at home in the quiet dust of a barn than the polished floor of a storefront, hospital or boardroom. Naturally, we gravitated toward the "oddballs"—the heritage sheep breeds that others ignored, the vegetable gardens that grow wild and diverse rather than in straight, clinical rows, and the fleeces that others called "imperfect."

To us, those imperfections are where the beauty lives. A fleece with a unique crimp or a sheep with a stubborn personality isn't a problem to be solved—it’s a life to be honored. We don't stick to the traditional or the popular because we’ve found that the most "worthy" things in life are often the ones that require a bit more time, a bit more grace, and a different way of thinking.

A Community for the Unconventional

Whether you are a shepherd with a "difficult" flock, a spinner looking for a fleece with soul, or a neighbor who feels a little out of place in the modern world—you belong here. We are stewards of the land, rescuers of fiber, and proud oddballs.

What oddball stands for

The Oddball Manifesto: Our Hands, Their Hearts

At Oddball Homestead and Shearing, our beliefs aren’t just written on paper—they are etched into the callouses on our hands and the way we move through the pasture. Every choice we make is a reflection of a simple truth: we are here to serve the life that sustains us.

Animals Above All

To us, sheep are not machines. They are individuals with temperaments, memories, and lives. We believe in patience over pace. If a shearing session takes a little longer to ensure a hand is steady and a heart rate is low, then that is time well spent. Calm handling and deep respect are our non-negotiables. If a practice isn't good for the animal, it simply isn't good enough for this homestead.

The Sacredness of Fiber

We believe that fiber is a living history of a season. Every fleece represents a year of growth, weather, care, and life. Because of this, we believe there is no such thing as "waste" wool. We see the potential in the tangles and the beauty in the "imperfect." By rescuing fleeces that others might discard, we honor the animal’s contribution and ensure that nothing of their life goes unappreciated.

Stewardship of the Story

When you hold a skein of our yarn or a piece of our harvest, you aren’t just holding a product. You are holding a piece of Southern Missouri—a story of elbow grease, ethical devotion, and a quirky belief that the world can be made softer, one gentle shear at a time.

The Oddball Story: From Kitchen Scissors to Professional Shearing

It all started when Maranda decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps, but on a much larger scale. She didn’t just want to work with raw fleece; she wanted to grow it. Driven by a passion to spin, knit, weave, and crochet from the source, she dreamed of a flock of her own.

Monti was immediately on board. Fresh out of culinary school, he had developed a deep appreciation for everything fresh, organic, and mindfully cultivated. To him, raising their own lamb was the ultimate expression of the "farm-to-table" philosophy. Soon, our small flock of Shetland sheep arrived on our first homestead. Just a 1/4 acer back yard in central Phoenix.

Then came the reality check: we couldn't find anyone to shear them.

The "Kitchen Scissors" Incident

Determined to get the job done, Monti stepped up to the plate. Armed with nothing but a pair of kitchen scissors and a lot of grit, he set to work. It didn’t take long—perhaps somewhere between the first leg and the second—to realize that kitchen cutlery was a terrible plan for both the sheep and his sanity.

Most people would have quit right there. Instead, Monti doubled down. He traded the kitchen shears for a spot in a professional shearing school, trading "DIY" desperation for the skilled, rhythm of shearing.

A Passion for the Harvest

What started as a chore born of necessity quickly spread like wildfire to other desperate small flock owners around us. Monti never set out to be a shearer for the masses, but as he moved from flock to flock, something shifted. He discovered a deep, unexpected passion—not just for the technique of the harvest, but for the shepherds themselves.

He found a community of people who, like us, lived for the quiet barn mornings and the honest work of the land.

A Family Woven Together

As the demand grew, so did the crew. Our story is written in the sweat and laughter of a family working side-by-side:

  • Mj joined the crew at fourteen. What started as a clever way to skip a few days of school and "play with sheep" by going to shearing school turned into a trial by fire. That first year was hard—the days were long and the work was heavy—but she didn’t back down. Today, she stands as an accomplished shearer, a skilled wool classer, and a true steward of the craft.

  • Ronan followed shortly after, fueled by a desire to fund his own passions. He learned early on that there is no money more honest than that earned in the shearing pen, and he has become a vital part of the rhythm that keeps us moving.

  • Danika found her own path through the ancient art of hand shearing. After taking a class from our dear friend Olivia at Nature Lane Fiber, she brought a new level of grace and tradition to the homestead, proving that there is room for every kind of touch in this work.

  • Gavin initially traded the quiet life of the homestead for the open road, spending his time behind the wheel of long-haul trucks. But as the miles piled up, so did the realization that he missed the land and the lifestyle he left behind. The siren song of the homestead eventually pulled him back, and today, he’s put those professional driving skills to work.  As our Trip Coordinator, Gavin is the engine that keeps our shearing routes running smoothly. But he isn’t stopping at the driver’s seat; he is currently training in wool classing and animal husbandry. Soon, he’ll be providing expert support on the board, ensuring that every fleece is handled with care and every animal is treated with the respect they deserve
  • Cullin, our youngest, is already finding his footing. Though he’s still waiting for the day he can man the shears, he is busy mastering the art of the fleece—learning to handle the wool with the same respect and care that defines everything we do..

More Than Just a Service

We aren’t just a shearing crew; we are a family of "oddballs" who believe that every sheep deserves a patient hand and every shepherd deserves a friend in the pen. We’ve built our reputation flock by flock, bridge by bridge. We don't stick to the traditional sheep breeds or the "expected" ways of thinking because we’ve seen the beauty in the unconventional.

From Monti’s first nervous shear to Mj’s expert classing and Danika’s steady hand, we are here to serve the Southern Missouri community. We are the stewards of the fiber, the friends of the flock, and the family that believes what some see as imperfect is actually exactly where the worth lies.

"Community feeds the homestead"

Whether through teaching, sharing fiber, or meeting at the farm stand, relationships are as important as products.
